Scuba diving in Gozo is an absolute must on my list of top diving spots in Europe, and for good reason!
Gozo is more relaxed and less busy than Malta. Diving here is mostly from the shore, and with over 30 dive sites, it caters to all levels. You’ll find caverns, caves, wrecks, walls, and stunning visibility, often better than 30 meters. Additionally, Gozo offers the famous and breathtaking Blue Hole. You can also easily combine diving in Gozo with a dive trip to Malta.
We flew with Ryanair from Eindhoven Airport to Malta International Airport, arriving shortly after 1 AM. From the airport, we took a taxi to the ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa, heading to Gozo Island.
- Taxi ride from the airport to the ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa (and vice versa): 35–40 minutes, costing 25–30 euros.
Getting to Our Stay in Gozo
The ferry to Gozo Island departs from Ċirkewwa every 30 to 45 minutes, taking about 20 minutes and operating throughout the entire night. Upon arriving in Gozo, we took a taxi from the terminal to our B&B in Xlendi Bay.
- Ferry ticket: Free on the way to Gozo. Note that you need to buy a ticket when returning from Gozo.
- Taxi ride from the terminal to the B&B (and vice versa): 15 minutes, costing approximately 16 euros.
Staying in Gozo – Xlendy Bay
As we arrived late, we decided to spend the rest of the day relaxing. In the morning, we took a stroll around Xlendi Bay’s center and enjoyed brunch. The area is filled with many cafés, restaurants, and water sports shops. Almost all the cafés and restaurants offer a sea or bay view, making them perfect spots to unwind.
In the afternoon, we hiked around the Xlendi Tower, which is accessible via several entry points on Il Kantra Street, near the bus stop.
Keep in mind that the terrain can be quite steep at times. I recommend wearing anti-slip or track shoes. The hike is well worth it, especially during sunset.
Diving in Gozo
We dived with Utina Diving, a small dive shop run by Aaron and Marion. Over five days, we completed 10 dives at various sites around the island, including Comino. Our group had a maximum of four people per guide. Since we went in July, the air temperature was around 27-30 degrees Celsius, while underwater temperatures ranged from 22-25 degrees Celsius, depending on the depth.
- Boat diving trip to Comino: 40 euros
Eating out
When it comes to dining, we explored several of the top-rated restaurants in the area. We found ourselves returning to Ta’ Karolina frequently, but we also really enjoyed the food at Ic-Cima and Da Manuel. All of these restaurants offer reasonable prices, outdoor seating, and lovely views of the sea.
Arranging the transfers
All taxi rides were arranged by our B&B. In Malta and Gozo, you can easily arrange transfers through your accommodation or dive school. Prices may vary depending on your location, so it’s best to inquire with them about transfer costs.
